Impress your Boss and Secure your Job
Many times I have asked myself up to the point of having it experienced it, what are the mains skills a Boss is looking for in an employee?.
I say “up to the point of having experienced it” because I did and then I read about it just to confirm it. Obviously there is no definitive guide about this but at least in my case that is what they are looking in me…
1. Commitment
If you feel anything less than total commitment to your job, don’t let the boss in on your little secret. This even more important for you than for your Boss, it is the same as saying: “Do what you love the most”. If you do not really enjoy your job or the Office environment then better get another job where you can really show what you are worth.
2. Attention to Detail
The big mess up get aired and thereby psychologically exorcised. It is the little ones, too minor to mention like a report that cannot be found, a failure to perform a little chore which build up irritation and resentment.
Many people tend to work to fast and furiously in the office not leaving enough time to read a report at least twice. In my case I always rather prefer to be late with a report but make them as impecable as possible. In the end most of those “fast” people’s reports are returned to be revised and corrected over and over again, meaning that I am always sooner than them.
3. Immediate Follow-Up
As insignificant as this may seem, there is nothing that impresses so significantly. Being ahead on small but important things always creates the feeling that you are more than commited and working the extra mile for the Business. If your Boss notices it he will never let go of you.

I agree with your points and one I would like to add which goes a long way when building rapport with your boss. Simple ‘do’ what you boss does not like doing. It might be as simple as writing a weekly status report for his boss. Volunteer to do it for him / her.
