Change Jobs the Smart Way

Posted in Business by Gustav S on the April 7th, 2008

If you believe another company is going to make you an offer that you cannot refuse then you would be insane not to get it, but what is the best way to change to another company without harming yourself or your actual company? What about trading off your loyalty with your actual company in exchange for a better position?

This is something I see and live everyday, my emails gets full of job offers from other banks, headhunters are everywhere looking to seize all those bonuses by stealing people from one company for another. Companies are really paying high prices for loyalty of their employees with extras in order for them to stay.

If people do not like to be conned, they do not like to be threatened either:

Your threat that you are looking for another job only hurts you. You have told your employer that you do not place much value on loyalty and worse, once you get the question asked by the interviewer at the new company, “why did you decide to work with us?” , you will relatively answer: “Just for the money and when someone else offers me more money I will change jobs again”. You lose something important while gaining nothing.

Stress the importance of your Loyalty:

When facing such kind of decisions the best thing is to openly discuss the situation in your actual company. Instead of saying, “Hey, they have offered me this, Either match it or top it or I am out!” just try to change the words and say something like: “Obviously, here is where my loyalty lie, and what can the company do so I do not have to take this other job?”

Many times employees do not realize the importance that almost any company places on loyalty always remember that loyalty is just another form of trust.
