8 Reasons why You cannot Sleep and 6 Easy Tricks to Fall Asleep
Everyday there is more and more people having problems to fall asleep and when you think that you live in this Internet age where everything is at reach with a couple of clicks it is sometimes kind of illogical, you for sure see or hear Ads saying: “Now, with the internet you can do everything with a single click at the comfort of your home, that way you will have “”"more time”"” time spend time with the ones you love” or you can “just send a SMS message and get an answer in a couple of seconds”. So where is this stress comming from? Is it that now you are looking to achieve more than what you can achieve in one day?
Not having enough sleep is counterproductive because your concentration lack and your perfomance diminishes, no matter how much technology you have at hand.
The name for this sleep disorder is called insomnia, and here is its definition as shown in wikipedia:
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by an inability to sleep and/or inability to remain asleep for a reasonable period. Insomniacs typically complain of being unable to close their eyes or “rest their mind” for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and nonorganic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder. It can be caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression, or bipolar disorder and sometimes occurs for no apparent reason. An overactive mind or physical pain may also be causes. Finding the underlying cause of insomnia is usually necessary to cure it. Insomnia can be common after the loss of a loved one, even months or a year after the death, if they are not grieving correctly (pretending they are over it when they are not). It very often occurs when the person has a lack of food or not enough variety of foods (such as eating one food over and over again). It is common for insomniacs to sleep walk and/ or have very vivid & intense dreams.
If we want to find a way to solve the problem first we will need to identify the problem.
I have some ideas why you might not be able to easily fall asleep when the moment to sleep comes:
1. You are still thinking actively about all you did on your day.
It is normal for our brains to keep going through all what you did on your day, you will remind some stressful or successful moments which will at the very same time make your cortisol or adrenaline levels to rise and this make you stay alert. Remember that your brain does not distinguish between imagination and reality. Make a quick test right now, you think about your worst fear… jajajaja you feel the fear right?
there you have it.
2. You work until too late and your brain is highly aroused.
For those who work at night and are not in control of their brains this is highly counterproductive. Your brain will be doing calculations, thinking about strategies, looking for solutions just when you are about to sleep. Your brain will not stop thinking and you will feel at unease. It is impossible to sleep.
3. You have to remember things to do for the next day and you are afraid of forgetting them.
Many of us, have long TO DO lists and if we do not take note, our brains will be repeating them over and over so you do not forget them, this will keep you awake.
4. You are under some medication or coffeine which distorts your sleep patterns.
5. You are tense and stressed.
6. You are worried.
7. You fear the future.
8. You feel too energic.
Here are some tricks you can use to fall asleep depending on your simptoms:
1. If you feel too energic, tense, stressed just go ahead and have sex. For sure you know, that after sex you feel way more relaxed and prone to fall asleep. I hear you say, well when I am tense (in the case of men) I really have a hard time to achieve an erection. Well, remember that “there is no bad sex, just lazy sex”, spend time thinking about something that arouse you. You can also try to do some exercise during the day, lowering your energy levels in a productive way will always help you fall asleep.
2. Take note of everything, immediately after taking note of all that you feel you need to remember you will feel much better because now you will not forget. If you do not have paper on hand or too lazy to get out of bed just take something that is near your bed and throw it, so when you wake up and see that object you threw you will immediately remember the reason why you did that.
3. Do some meditation, concentrate on your breath (read my article on meditation) and let your mind wander freely without following every chit chat of your mind. Without even noticing you will be sleeping like a kid.
4. Try putting a towel or an eye coverer over your eyes, sometimes the feeling of something covering your eyes will make you fall asleep. I just found this out of luck, for me it really works.
5. Try to think about something very different or boring, you need to find out what makes you relax, imagine yourself sitting in a beautiful landscape and you focus on seeing the trees being shaken by the wind…
6. If you are a PLAN addict, then take your Time Scheduler (or Agenda) or wherever you write your daily tasks and write “SLEEP” as it is also part of your daily tasks. Your brain is so used to follow your Task Scheduler that it will just do exactly what you wrote over there
.
