Avoid information overload and Go Practice!
The internet, is a great place to find information, with over 3 billion of indexed web pages it is very easy to find whatever you are looking for. That is great to some extent but now we are all facing a side effect which is information overload. Information overload is as bad as lack of information, you feel like you do not know where to start, which is the very same feeling as when you do not have enough information.
You find yourself surrounded of so many different opinions on the same subject that you do not know what or who to believe, some information is complete other is incomplete and in the end you end giving up before you even start.
Information overload makes you an information addict, you cannot stop reading, you feel like you need to keep reading stuff which you will never apply.
The following comment posted on 10 Reasons why only 4% of the population achieve their goals hit it right on the nail:
“Because the other 96% of the population are spending all of their time reading or creating useless lists.”
In other words, you just spend all your time reading instead of applying knowledge. I have found people who have told me:
“I have read over 700 personal growth books” and I say well, then “why dont you apply that knowledge then?”
Personal growth, goal achievemnt or whatever you decide to do, demands some qualities of your person, and for that you need to train your skills, no book will make that for you. The only way is to apply knowledge and that it is not as easy as you might think. If that were the case you would have already made that, dont you think?
Let’s take the example of discipline, no matter which book or blog you read you will find that discipline is very important…great you say, “I will wave my magic wand and from today I am a disciplined person” … I wish you luck if you think it is that easy
. If you need to be disciplined then it is time to train discipline. When you train your personal qualities there is no way to separate them for specific tasks, with that I mean it is not possible to be disciplined when you follow your business plan and not be disciplined at the moment of eating. Discipline is discipline is discipline, there is no way to cheat. Discipline is just how honest you are with yourself. That also means that you need to practice discipline everywhere and in every aspect of your life if you really wish to attain certain discipline level that will lead to success.
Let me show you a real life example of my own:
I do work in an environment where Stress, pressure and lot of work is always around. At first sight you would say, that all my work colleagues are disciplined, they do their job right but after you examine a little deeper you notice that all of them drink coffee and a great deal of them do smoke.
Does that mean that they have really achieved discipline? NO, of course not, they are just turning to addiction to get a hold of what they do… They are in some way or another doping themselves to have the job done.
A real example of discipline is achieving the same results on the very same work environment, surrounded with your coffee and nicotine addicted colleagues and never feel tempted to taste a cup of coffee or a cigarrette. So once you are really disciplined you are disciplined in ALL YOU DECIDE TO DO.
Someone who have read 1 good book can do as good or even better than someone who have read 700 books, if you really practice what the book says. Always remember that “there are many ways to skin a cat” so do not worry there is no better way than the other.
The reason why is so hard to achieve goals or succeed is because you cannot pay someone to do that for yourself, it is something that only YOU can do it.
So it is time to apply some discipline on yourself, stop reading, let a couple of days go without thinking about the subject then decide for a strategy and follow it, stop looking for the holy grail because the holy grail is inside you.
