It actually describes those qualities as "fruit" because they grow from you. Like a piece of fruit on a tree, first comes the tree or the vine. Jesus said that He is the vine and we are the branches, that we cannot bear fruit of ourselves but it comes from His life(the sap if you like) that is in us. Then the buds appear, and the blossoms - very attractive, but no fruit yet. Then the fruit forms and after a season we have the mature fruit. This is both attractive and useful - it nourishes others. It is not for our benefit, but for the benefit of others. The tree or vine is ferd by the life of God in us. That life is then meant to produce a benefit for others - not ourselves. Got it?
